Expedition Stories

Some highlights included footage of giant plumose anemones and basket stars, as those that stayed warm and dry got a chance to see what thrives below the ship. Our visit to the U’mista Cultural Center was a favorite of many; it was fascinating to see the many artifacts returned to Alert Bay after being stolen by Canadian authorities in the 1920s. But the best part of the day was witnessing dances by the T’sasala Cultural Group in the Big House.

As luck would have it, the 20-mph morning winds died down, enticing intrepid kayakers to ply the waters of Marmes Pond. After emerging from lock at Little Goose Dam, Mississippi-reared executive chef Eddie McField Jr. added yet another chapter to his delectable array of Pacific Northwest-inspired cuisine. Among the entrées was the Olsen Vineyard Chardonnay-Poached Wild Caught Pacific Sablefish, presented on a purée of black lentils grown in the nearby Palouse. The dish elevated the Dusted Valley Vintners 2021 Olsen Vineyard Chardonnay from Washington’s Yakima Valley. Evening education featured an entertaining presentation titled “Birds of the Columbia River” by cultural specialist Kyle Bowman. To achieve this, ships in the Lindblad fleet are designed by the people who will use them.

National Geographic Islander II

Generations of families were present and dancing together after years of having to hide their cultural traditions, reminding everyone of the importance of supporting our communities and youth. Each ship in the Lindblad fleet is either purpose built to explore a region of the planet or leased on a basis of what they can add to the expedition experience. Just as a restaurant will design its kitchen based on a menu, the ship is tailored to exploring the planet’s most foreboding places in extreme comfort. Some are designed to navigate shallow rivers and deploy narrow skiffs to explore flooded forests. Others tailored to sailing along wild coasts and venturing into fast-moving, shallow channels where whales gather seasonally to feed. And yet others are made to go far into the planet’s polar regions in safety and comfort without resupplying fuel or provisions for weeks on end.
